Repetition and Color in 4th Grade

First, students studied the color wheel, creatively exploring how many colors they could mix with just the primary and secondary colors. Then they learned about the harmony created by analogous colors versus the dynamism that complementary colors provide. Next, they looked at how artist Spencer Reynolds uses color, contrast, and repeating shapes in his water-inspired paintings. Finally, the students created watercolor paintings based on photographs of water. At the end, in recognition of the annual spring spawning of the herring, they added a silhouette image of any of the local species dependent on Southeast Alaska's herring. (many thanks to the Juneau School District for portions of the unit idea)
